Closed
Date:
May 27, 2021
Time:
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Recorded on: May 27, 2021 12:00 noon CT
Presenter: Dr. Samiul Amin is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Manhattan College and currently leads the Cosmetic Engineering focus area. He has been working in industrial R&D for the past 20+ years across a range of industrial sectors covering cosmetics, consumer goods and scientific instrumentation and has held senior level R&D roles global companies including L'Oreal, Unilever and Malvern Instruments.

Microbially produced biosurfactants, biodegradable polymers and sustainable ingredients like chitosan and silk proteins are gaining the interest of the home and personal care industry as alternatives to petroleum-derived materials. However, a move to fully sustainable materials will only be successful if performance criteria such as rheology and surface activity match or surpasses that obtained from traditional surfactants and polymers. High throughput formulation automation and advanced characterization techniques provide a route into fast engineering of microstructures and interactions for effective product formulation design. The utility and benefits of this approach were illustrated for a range of sustainable and biodegradable alternatives and their combinations.
