Presenter: Benjamin Schwartz, Senior Personal Care Application Specialist, AAK USA Inc.

This webinar examined how the molecular structure and chemical properties of plant-based oils, fats, and other lipids influence the attributes of personal care products. The following topics were covered:

  • The basic structure of plant derived triglycerides, focusing on how the fatty acid profile and triglyceride composition of various oils and fats can guide our ingredient choices.
  • How the different solid fat content of common plant fats/butters can contribute to the physical properties of packaged products and the sensorial affects of these products once applied to the skin.
  • A description of the native lipids found on the skin surface and how the upper layers of the skin interact with various emollients (oils, fats, esters, etc.) depending on their chemical properties.
  • The influence of component triglycerides on the crystal polymorphs of various plant fats and how these crystallization properties can help or hinder the performance of personal care products.
