DEFINITION
This method is for the determination of fatty acid composition of hydrogenated and unhydrogenated vegetable fats and oils by capillary gas–liquid chromatography (GLC), using an SP-2340 column.

SCOPE
The method is designed to evaluate, by a single capillary GLC procedure, three properties of a vegetable oil: (a) the fatty acid composition, (b) level of trans unsaturation and (c) cis, cis methylene-interrupted unsaturation. This procedure reports the trans content as the area percent of all components that have one or more trans double bonds. The cis, cis value is determined by summing the results from methyl linoleate and methyl linolenate. Trans content as determined by this procedure may not agree with trans content as determined by the infrared spectrophotometric method (AOCS Official Method Cd 14-61). There is a reported observation indicating that the method underestimates the trans-octadecenoate content in favor of the cis isomers in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils.
